We had a great send off yesterday with Andy and Steve on Tutto Bene, friends and family on the balcony at St. Francis, and the harbor porpoise escort out the G8. Of course, as expected, the wind shut off once we reached the Pacific Ocean. There were many whales feeding off of the coast, some coming by to check us out. We saw the first of many beautiful sunsets to come. As we slowly approached the Farallones (with a silent tribute to Low Speed Chase), everyone shut off and put away their now non-functional cell phones. The warm day turned into a foggy, cold night with the frustrating loud noises from flogging sails and lines banging against the boom. We are going through that initial transition period of acclimatizing to watch schedules, sleep deprivation, and living life at a bumpy angle. However, it is not so bad this time as the sea state is quite calm. My muscles are a bit sore from grinding winches at the start, sleeping in a narrow berth, and just balancing against the ocean for hours. I also have a whole new set of boat bruises that I won't see for a few days until I change my clothes (showers are few and far between out here). This morning, we discovered a stow away - dreaded bulb kelp! While I was hanging off the "sugar scoop" poking at the pesky plant with a boat hook, a pod of Pacific White Sided Dolphins swam within 50 feet. After a true team effort and a bit of sailing in the wrong direction, said offending kelp was removed. Today is Mark's birthday. His wish for wind came true and we are now off to the races. I am happy to say that the big pile of rocks to the east (that's you!) is no longer on our horizon. We finally feel like we are on our way to the 808-state. Today's deets (that means details):
Boat Smell Factor: 1
Possible Source: head (not bad really)
Creatures: whales, albatross, sea lions, jellyfish, dolphins
Boat speed: about 7
Words of the Day: Sail it like you stole it
Shout out: Thanks to my assistant Yebonya for taking care of things back at the office
Dinner: tri tip with salad and potatoes (we DO have refrigeration) Peace Out, Bagley
